The Pocatello Sports Committee has contributed $1,000 to the Milton W. 鈥淒ubby鈥� Holt Scholarship Endowment and calls on other organizations that have held successful events in Holt Arena also to contribute.
   鈥淲ithout a Holt Arena, there wouldn鈥檛 be a Sports Committee,鈥� says I.J. 鈥淏abe鈥� Caccia, Holt鈥檚 longtime friend and a founding member of the Sports Committee. 鈥淲e hope that other people who have benefited from Dubby Holt鈥檚 vision in building this facility will contribute to the Holt scholarship fund.鈥�
    The Sports Committee has backed numerous community events, including professional boxing and wrestling and the world-championship cutter races. It got its start by successfully promoting the 1987 and 1988 NCAA Division I-AA National Championship football games in Holt Arena.
    鈥淚t鈥檚 a wonderful thing that a group will step forward with the realization that Holt Arena has provided opportunities for thousands of people in the community and beyond,鈥� says Dr. Kent Tingey, ISU vice president for university advancement. 鈥淚 appreciate Babe and the Sports Committee for showing this leadership.鈥�
    The Holt Scholarship provides financial assistance for fifth-year student athletes who have completed their eligibility. Preference is given to Idaho residents within 32 credits of graduation. Candidates should have a minimum 2.5 grade point average, and have demonstrated leadership, character, involvement in student organizations and community service.
    Some past recipients include track-and-field athletes Jackie Poulson, Benjamin Allen, Ashley Tucker, and Danny Harry; soccer player Sarah Hobdey; golfer Jessica Thames; and tennis player Denise Cockrell.
