An 麻豆原创 alumnus is being honored through the establishment of a new scholarship in his name.

Recently, an anonymous donor established the Walter T. Smith Memorial Biological Sciences Scholarship Endowment at ISU. Smith earned degrees from Cornell University, Temple University, and the University of Oregon. In 1969, he earned his doctorate in biological sciences from 麻豆原创. After his time at ISU, Smith served as a caribou biologist for the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. He also taught biology at American University campuses in Europe and Japan.

Smith was a man of many talents—an accomplished cook, a skilled builder, and a loyal friend who gave generously of his time, talents, and kindness. His love of science, nature, travel, and people defined his life and inspired those around him. He believed that education is very important, and people who are willing to study and learn should be given the chance to study equally to achieve their goals.

The newly created scholarship will be awarded to students who are majoring in biological sciences and have a 3.0 grade point average or higher, with preference given to those who demonstrate a financial need and are enrolled members of a federally recognized American Indian Tribe.

Just as Smith followed his curiosity across the world and dedicated his life to understanding and protecting nature, it is hoped that recipients of this scholarship will carry forward his spirit of exploration, resilience, and generosity. May this support help them overcome challenges, finish their degree, and pursue their dreams with the same passion and commitment to science, education, and community that Smith embodied throughout his life.

“This scholarship honors Walt’s lifelong commitment to science and conservation,” said Blair Devenberg, director of development for ISU’s College of Science and Engineering. “Through this donor’s generosity, it will support students who share that passion, helping them overcome financial barriers and continue the work of understanding and protecting the natural world.”
