Hazardous Waste
EHSS team is responsible for expertly handling the safe disposal of hazardous materials throughout the campus.
ISU’s hazardous waste program is regulated by the EPA and the Idaho DEQ under the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA).
Waste is legally "hazardous" if it meets specific federal definitions based on its properties or chemical listing. If you are unsure of a substance's status, contact EHS for a formal determination.
EHS works with generators to reduce waste volume and toxicity. Minimizing waste lowers disposal costs and improves lab safety.

EHS removes hazardous waste from satellite accumulation areas in laboratories, work areas and classrooms on the Pocatello Campus weekly. Other campuses and non-contiguous facilities are serviced directly by Idaho State’s hazardous waste disposal vendor every 6 months. . Use the link below to submit a waste removal request
As soon as the first drop of hazardous waste is added to an accumulation container, the container must be properly labeled in accordance with RCRA requirements. EHS provides hazardous waste labels for your use. Submit a so we can provide it (also available in the Biology and Chemistry stockrooms). Refer to “” for instructions on completing the label correctly.
If you are requesting disposal of an original chemical container, once you submit your , you will immediately receive an email containing a waste label. Please print the label and attach it to the container promptly to maintain compliance with RCRA labeling requirements.
Recent updates to the hazardous waste rules included a provision for making a hazardous waste determination at the point of generation. EHS has developed resources for assisting in making a hazardous waste determination and is available for consultation and assistance. Hazardous waste determination forms should be maintained at the point of generation.
